About

The Association of Africans in Okanagan is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening the social well‑being, inclusion, and resilience of African and Black residents in the Okanagan region.

We support community members through culturally informed programs, newcomer settlement assistance, youth mentorship, anti‑racism education, and initiatives that build meaningful social connections. Our work highlights the contributions of African residents while addressing the social and economic barriers that impact immigrant and minority communities.

Our mission is to empower African and Black individuals and families in the Okanagan by fostering community connection, advancing equity and inclusion, supporting successful settlement and integration, and creating opportunities for cultural expression, dialogue, and personal growth.

Vision

A connected, inclusive, and equitable Okanagan where African and Black community members have full access to opportunities, feel a strong sense of belonging, and are supported to thrive socially, culturally, and economically.

Purpose

Strengthen Community Well‑Being

Our purpose is to strengthen the well‑being and resilience of the African and Black community in the Okanagan by offering programs that support successful settlement, community integration, and personal empowerment. We work with newcomers, families, and youth to ensure they have access to the resources, guidance, and connections needed to navigate life in a new environment and build a strong sense of belonging.

Advance Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

We are committed to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion by providing education, tools, and community‑based learning opportunities that address racism and promote understanding. Through seminars, workshops, and peer‑led initiatives, we equip community members and partners with the knowledge and skills to challenge discrimination and foster inclusive spaces across the region.

Celebrate and Share African Cultures

We also celebrate and share the richness of African cultures through events, food and fashion showcases, and storytelling initiatives that highlight the vibrancy and diversity of the continent. By collaborating with community partners and creating opportunities for members to represent African cultures at local events, we promote cross‑cultural understanding and strengthen the social fabric of the Okanagan.
